Patterned Rugs

Patterned Rugs

You want your bedroom to be a reflection of your personality, whether that means cool and laid-back, vibrant and funky or something in between. The best way to do that is to pick decor for your room that tells the world who are but at the same time makes it an inviting place where you want to hang out with friends, do your homework or just chill by yourself and binge on your favorite show. One great way to show off your style is to choose a patterned rug for your floor. At PBteen, we offer a selection of patterned rugs to fit every style, from floral and stripes to sports and beach themes.

Before you get to the fun part – picking out your pattern – you need to start with the basics. What size rug do you need? The size of your bedroom, amount of floor space and placement of your furniture can play a role in your decision. Choose something too small, and instead of making a statement, you might not notice the rug’s great colors or pattern. Choose something too big, and it can overwhelm your other room accessories.

Waking up in the morning and touching your feet to a cold floor can be a little jarring. That is where there are generally two rules of thumb when it comes to buying a rug, and each one means covering the flooring beside your bed to prevent that morning shock to your system. Some people choose a large square or rectangular rug that fits up under the bottom two thirds of the bed and is visible on either side and beyond the foot of the bed. Others opt to put a small rug at the foot of the bed and two runner style rugs on either side of the bed. If your bed happens to be against the wall, simply putting a large square or rectangular rug in the center of the room should work, as long as it is large enough to fill the space.

One more thing to consider before picking a pattern is what type of material you want to choose. For example, if you have pets that shed, you may want something that is easy to vacuum pet hair from frequently, such as a short-pile rug that doesn’t have super-long fibers. If you spend a great deal of time in your bedroom or often have friends over, your rug might see more foot traffic than it would in another space, so be sure to get something that is durable and easy to clean. Low-pile and flatweave rugs are typically easier to clean. Rugs made from natural and plant-based materials such as jute and hemp are durable. Rugs that are over-dyed or distressed show do not show wear or stains as easily and add a vintage look to your space.

Now, it is time to choose your pattern. This is where you get to have fun. Many decorators suggest choosing your rug before buying any other decor for your bedroom. If you already have bedding you want to keep, consider how your rug matches your comforter or duvet. If the bedding is neutral or a solid color, you can go all-out with your rug choice. However, if your bedding features multiple bright colors or intricate patterns, you may want to choose a rug with simple patterns that match one or two of those colors.
