Just four years ago, Michael was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to spend quite a bit of time in the hospital. After a spinal tap, he spent one long day recovering in bed and that's when he realized he needed to find something fun and entertaining for other patients just like him to do.
When he returned home, he and his brother began writing letters to companies asking for donations of games, toys and other small items that could all fit inside a shoebox, so that they could give other kids in the hospital ways to stay entertained during long-term hospital stays.
They began Boredom Busters.
Now, every Boredom Buster Box is filled with cards, toys and activities. Each box also includes a baseball cap, usually donated by several colleges throughout the country, because Michael also remembered how hard it was for him to leave his room after he had to shave his head.
Since Boredom Busters began, Michael, his brother and his sister have put together over 2,500 boxes and delivered them to various hospitals in the Washington DC area and in North Carolina. Last year, Michael's friend and NBA player, JJ Redick, who plays for the Orlando Magic, donated money to make it possible to deliver even more boxes to children in hospitals.
Boredom Busters has not only helped Michael deal with his own illness, but it has also allowed him to pay it forward and help other kids in similar situations.
He hopes to continue with his project for many years.
Keep up the great work Michael!
