Teachers inspire kids every day. And after Brett met his elementary school teacher Mrs. Black, who was wheelchair-bound due to multiple sclerosis (MS), he was encouraged to do more for others, specifically those affected by MS.
He made a pact with his father that as soon as he was old enough, he would ride his bike in the biggest East Coast fundraiser to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He wanted to ride for his teacher and for others who would never be able to walk again.
At just seven years old, he went door to door and sold enough fundraising items to win the prize of a new bike so that he could ride in the race. And although he's outgrown that small bike, he has stayed on the course and continued his mission.
For the past four years, Brett has participated in the MS 150–mile City to Shore Bike Tour to help raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. And since 2003 he has raised thousands of dollars and has successfully campaigned to make others aware of this disease. He's gained supporters from local elementary schools, middle schools, and now even the high school in his community.
He has truly followed his teacher's lead in becoming an inspiration to others and he's now in the process of organizing a high school team to ride with him in next year's race.
