When Emily learned she had to create a service project for her science class, she knew exactly where to start. She began Jeans 4 Teens, a collection drive that has since grown into a community-wide effort. Jeans 4 Teens benefits students who are less fortunate than others and can't always afford the latest fashion trends, which can sometimes lead to ridicule by peers.
Upon receiving permission from her school's county Superintendent and area school principals, Emily placed posters, flyers and collection boxes at middle schools and high schools throughout her county asking for donations of new or gently worn jeans.
The generosity and support from fellow classmates and the community have been phenomenal. To date, Emily has successfully collected and distributed more than 500 pairs of jeans to teenagers within her community and local organizations such as Martha's Mission, Boys and Girls Club of America, Carteret County Domestic Violence and Christmas Cheer.
Emily received an A on her service project and has helped raise awareness among teens in her community of how hurtful it is to judge someone based on their clothing.
She hopes that with their donations, teens realize they can make a difference in the lives of others. Emily knows she has and is already making plans to make Jeans 4 Teens an annual event at her school and within her community.
