As a former foster child, 14-year-old Heather knows what it's like not having a home to call her own. Now that she's been adopted into a loving family, she's made it her goal to improve the lives of other foster kids in her community.
By writing several booklets that are distributed to local shelters, orphanages and counseling centers, Heather has been able to reach children who are struggling with the very issues she once faced. Her booklets help inspire and educate foster kids about their rights and their unique situations. From stories about famous people who were once foster kids to definitions of common legal terms, Heather's booklets provide information as well as entertainment.
Along with writing booklets, Heather has also put together scrapbooking workshops for foster kids. With the help of a grant and donations, she's been able to provide the kids with supplies so that they can create scrapbooks about their lives, their favorite activities and their dreams. Since most foster kids don't have many belongings, these scrapbooks give them something special to bring with them wherever they go.
Heather's creative booklets and workshops have made an important impact on her community and have helped many kids feel more comfortable and confident in dealing with the issues foster kids face every day. As a young writer and volunteer Heather has helped make the world a brighter place for many kids.
