How to Decorate a Dorm with String Lights

A dorm room represents and exciting transition into a new stage of your life - however, it usually doesn't come with any decoration when you arrive! When making your dorm into your home away from home, it's up to you to make it come to life and reflect your personality. Few things are quite as versatile and charming as string lights in a dorm. Take a look at a few ideas to inspire the interior designer in you.

Go for a Funky DIY Headboard

The coziness factor in any space quadruples when you take the time to line the walls with mementos and tokens from your life. We recommend targeting the space just over your bed, but really, wherever you want on your wall will do. There's no need to take measurements - just start to layer on every picture, note and vista from home. Feel free to play it by ear until you've got a functional collage that embodies all the important elements of what makes you who you are.

Now, for the finishing touch. Unspool the string lights and craft a makeshift frame for your handiwork with them. Not only will the wall display and the string lights naturally come together as a focal piece for your room, you'll also be able to catch glimpses of your collage even in the middle of the night.

Make a Lighted Polaroid Sequence

In keeping with the idea above, you can use the space on your wall to put up candid photos and Polaroids that tell a story. Hoist the pictures up with big, bold string lights to create visual texture and make the photos stand out in the limelight.

Accentuate The Window with a View

They say that scoring a room with a view is a sign of tremendous luck. If lady fortune smiled on you, why not make that feature your dorm's crown jewel? Alongside any curtains, also drape your window with a string of flickering string lights. The soft glow works with natural sunlight to create a serene, atmospheric space. Best of all, this setup gives you the world's greatest night-light when the campus goes to sleep.

Mark Your Turf

String lights also work splendidly as statement pieces. There are many upsides to having a roommate in your dorm, but sharing your space with someone else does pose an interesting quandary: how do you make your half of the room stand out as your own in a graceful and friendly manner? The answer is remarkably simple and elegant. Hang string lights up on your side, and watch the walls become illuminated with a soft gleam.

There's no end to all the beautiful ways you can use string lights to liven your dorm. Unleash your creativity and have fun decorating your new home away from home.
