Creating Unique Wall Art with String Lights

String lights are for more than just the holidays! But what’s the best way to incorporate them into your bedroom decor? You can simply string them around the ceiling and enjoy their sparkling glow, but there are so many great ways to get creative with them – you may want to give one of these DIY projects from PBteen a try. It doesn’t take much effort or equipment to create wall art with string lights; all you need is a great idea, some string lights and a fastener to connect them to the wall.

Spell It Out

One way to make truly unique wall art with string lights is to use your string lights to spell out a meaningful word or phrase. You can use different sets of string lights to create individual block letters, or you can use a single strand to spell out your word in cursive. Think about what words, phrases or letters mean most to you to help your creation reflect your personality.

Picturesque Patterns

If you want, you can actually use string lights to cover a lot of space on your walls in order to add some additional lighting to the room. To do this in an artistic way, think about making wallpaper-like patterns with multiple strands of lights. You can make simple stripes, chevrons or waves running horizontally or vertically across your walls. Feel free to use different colors of lights to make the effect more rainbow-esque and dramatic. If you want to stick with white light, consider alternating between warm and cool LED string lights to get some variation without adding different colors.

Frame It Up

String lights can also act as makeshift frames for posters, windows or large tapestries. If you prefer a polished decor style and you have something on the wall that’s too big to frame, consider adding string lights around the perimeter to define the piece and help it stand out. You can use this strategy with a mirror and some globe lights to create a glamourous, Old-Hollywood feel to a vanity, as well.

Highlight Your Talent

To really make your bedroom decor shine, consider using string lights as part of an original art composition. Get some acrylic paint and a large canvas, and make sure you have a sharp cutting tool and cool-touch LED string lights to create glowing finishing touches. Paint any scene you want that can use some string light accents – it could be a galaxy or constellation painting, a nighttime landscape or an original abstract piece. Choose the points where you want your string light bulbs to poke through and make a small cut through the canvas. Poke the string light LED bulb through the canvas and, when you plug it in, it’ll shine as part of the artwork itself.

Dazzling Photo Display

Take advantage of the “string” aspect of your string lights by using them to display photos. Print out small copies of pictures from your phone, or send shots from your profiles to a company that specializes in social media photo printing. You can also go old school by using an instant film camera to take pictures. Select photos that make you happy and inspire you, and then clip them to your string lights with small clothespins or alligator clips. Use cool-touch LED string lights to keep your photos safe from heat.

Make Your Own Headboard

You can also use string light wall art above your bed in place of an actual headboard. Look up some fun and fancy headboard shapes and choose one that reflects your style. Measure your bed and mark the wall so you can make it even, and then draw the shape of the headboard onto the wall using chalk or light pencil marks – something that’s easy to erase. Add clips or tacks to the wall around the perimeter of your new headboard shape, taking care to add more clips in any detailed spots around the design. Use a single strand of lights around the design to define it, and then consider filling in a few more strands to make it stand out.
