First Apartment Rugs and Windows

For your first apartment, what you do with the floors and windows goes a long way in helping make your digs feel homey and more comfortable. This allows you to settle in faster. Among the many tips you'll likely receive when furnishing your first apartment is to start with basic furniture for your bedroom, kitchen and living room. Rugs and window treatments are among these basic furnishings as they provide both practical and decorative functions for your apartment. Rugs give your feet a more comfortable area to step on while window treatments give you privacy and allow you to control the light and breeze that come into the room.

As decorative elements, rugs and window treatments help establish the color palette of a particular room, whether it is the living room, bedroom or kitchen. Since rugs and window treatments also come with various designs and patterns, you can use them to give the room character and set the mood that you want for the room. We have a wide selection of rugs and window treatments in various sizes, colors and styles. As with other PBteen offerings, the diversity of the styles of our rugs and windows we carry can also be a source of design inspiration, helping you become more acquainted with your tastes in design as you go about furnishing your first apartment.

Picking the right size is important when shopping for rugs and window treatments. In many cases, a rug for the living room balances out the room when it is large enough to fit beneath the legs of the seating furniture in the room. If you also want a rug for the eating area, one way to go is to choose a rug size large enough to frame the dining table and chairs with room to spare when you pull out the chairs to sit down. Rugs for the bedroom often start from about three-quarters of the bed and continue on about 20 inches or so from the foot and sides of the bed. Short pile rugs work well in high traffic areas while longer pile floor coverings give you a more plush and luxurious feel.

Length and width are also important when it comes to your window treatments. For drapes that give you a full look, the width of drapes is at least twice as wide as the width of the window. For the length, you can choose for the drapes to stop a few inches or more from the floor or go into a neat pile at the foot of the window. To get the right length, make sure to factor in the distance of the drapery rods from the top of the window and the kind of heading you have on your drapes. You can choose sheer drapes if you want light and breeze to enter a room or go with blackout curtains for complete privacy.
