4 Ways to Add a Pop of Color to Your Bed with Pillows

Your bed is one of the biggest and most noticeable things in your bedroom. When you consider how to decorate your bedroom, it makes sense to arrange your bed to reflect your personal style. One great way to do this is to use decorative pillows for creative bedding arrangements. Decorative pillows come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colors, so you can add a pop of color and touches of contrast and texture to your bed. This makes a big style statement while also creating additional comfort.

1. Start with a Base Layer

You can layer your decorative pillows to create tiers of color and texture. This makes your bed ultra-cozy, and it’s also a great idea for lounging around if you don’t have room for chairs or bean bags in your bedroom. Give yourself enough pillows to prop yourself up, starting with a good base layer. You can choose sheets with matching or contrasting pillow cases, and then pick out some pillow inserts that match the kind of support and the fill type you want. Down and down alternative are both great options.

Your duvet cover is probably the top layer of bedding in terms of your covers, and you can pick matching pillow shams to create a middle layer of pillows between your base pillow layer and the decorative pillows you’ll put on top. Because your pillow shams will probably match your duvet, they’re ideal for setting the stage for those pops of color, which come in the top layer of accent pillows you’ll add next.

2. Add Eye-Catching Accent Pillows

Your top layer of pillows is where you can really show-off your sense of creativity. The accent pillows making up this top layer can be in fun shapes and exciting patterns that really catch the eye and make your room look fantastic. Pick out a few accent pillows in different shapes, sizes and colors to make an eclectic arrangement, or choose a matching set of two or three pillows in an accent color that sticks out from the rest of your bedding. If you’re going to choose just one accent pillow, it’s fun to choose one that will really stand out. If your bedding is bright and colorful, however, you might want to choose a subtle, solid color.

3. To Match or Not to Match?

You can match your accent pillows with colors in your duvet or comforter, but you can also go for a complete contrast. To match your accent pillows, it helps to have a printed duvet with multiple colors in it. For a pop of coordinating color, pick out accent pillows that match a few of the highlight colors in your duvet cover print. For example, if you have a gray duvet with blue-and-black plaid with red and green accents, pick out red and green pillows to highlight the least-prominent colors in your duvet print.

You can get really dramatic with your accent pillows if you want to. For that plaid duvet example, you could choose a yellow pillow to add a completely different color into the mix. Yellow looks great with gray, blue, black, red and green, but because it doesn’t show up on the duvet itself, its presence in your accent pillow arrangement adds a sharp point of contrast that draws your eye. If you have a solid duvet or comforter, say in a neutral color like navy blue, you can choose bright pillows in neon or metallic shades to really make them pop.

4. Choosing the Right Pillows for Your Style

Ultimately, the decorative pillows you choose for your bedding arrangement should appeal to your unique sense of style. Choose solid-colored accent pillows in the colors of your favorite sports team, or choose printed decorative pillows that showcase your favorite animal. If you like rainbows, pick out individual accent pillows that show off each color of the rainbow. Do what feels right to you, and you’ll love the finished product.
